Is Wooden Patio Furniture Right for You?

Outdoor furniture is a must for many homeowners and even renters. There are lots of choices these days when it comes to patio furniture. You'll find aluminum, iron, wicker and even wood. Wooden patio furniture is popular because it looks beautiful in a natural setting and comes in a variety of styles. The most popular types of wood for outdoor furniture include varieties like cedar and teak. Which type of wood is best depends on your preference and how much you're willing to spend. There are several reasons why these two types of wood are preferable over other woods.

Cedar, for example, has natural insect repelling qualities because of its fragrance. It is strong yet light, which means it will hold up under abuse yet is easy to move from one place to another. Most wood furniture made for outdoors will be weatherproofed. Even so, cedar has natural properties that help protect it from the elements. Its gorgeous natural color is another selling point. As time goes by, one can expect their rich cedar furniture to fade a bit to a gorgeous pale shade that gets better with age. Some people describe the color of aged cedar to be a silvery shade.

Maybe you'd prefer teak. Teak is one of the strongest and most attractive woods available. It can be expensive, but if you're looking for something that's top quality you can't go wrong with teak. Because it is so durable, it holds up under years of use, various weather conditions and even insects. Some people choose to stain their teak furniture, others don't. Teak is one of the few woods for outdoor furniture that can be used naturally or stained depending on your preference. There are various treatments and oils that can be applied to increase the level of protection against weather damage.

Wooden patio furniture may require some upkeep every few years to keep it looking its best. To prolong the life of your outdoor wood furniture, keep it covered when not in use and never place it directly on the grass. Doing so exposes the furniture to more moisture that can hasten damage. If you're using it on the grass, there are protective metal feet you can use to protect the wood from being exposed. Most wood furniture requires very little cleaning and only needs a basic wipe down and the occasional polishing.
