For your outdoor living area, what's old is new again thanks to the trend of retro patio furniture. Retro, also known as vintage, is a trend that is based around the styles, colors, materials and fabrics of decades past. Most commonly, retro pieces are going to be inspired by the 50s and 60s. Whether you are looking for a metal, wood or plastic patio set, you can find plenty of fun choices with vintage flair. Rather than buy a piece of furniture that is actually from the 50s or 60s, your best bet is to buy a newly constructed piece that has been inspired by an old piece.

You might be wondering what constitutes a piece of furniture as retro style. Some of the characteristics of this style are sleek yet artsy metal, bright colors, bold prints and fun designs. For example, you might find some modern patio sets in bright silver that invoke a space age feeling. This, in fact, is actually retro. From my own childhood, I remember metal swivel chairs with bright vinyl cushions. The print was bright and bold -- green with large yellow and white daisies. Another popular piece on my grandmother's patio was a metal glider that didn't rock but instead featured a sliding motion. I remember it being painted white, then later repainted in a bright yellow.

There are pieces like these available from today's patio furniture manufacturers. The difference is that they are even more durable and lasting than their older counterparts. As previously mentioned, you're probably better off with a new piece of furniture. But if you've got your heart set on a true vintage piece for your patio, there are some places that offer restored furniture from days gone by. Inspect the piece in detail before buying to make sure it's free from rust and wear.
Whether you go with a real retro piece or a new one inspired by past decades, retro patio furniture can bring new life to any outdoor area. Everyone will love relaxing on the colorful, inviting patio furniture you've chosen. To add comfort and color to your retro style furniture, try adorning with bright seat cushions in eye-catching prints. Just because you're outside doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to live in fashion and comfort!
